Book Blog Tours are a relatively new phenomenon and, while you can organize your own, it can be difficult without the proper connections and, with the cost of some of these tours, really not worth it. These companies promote their tours through a range of online media and, frankly, do all the work for you so you can focus on other things, like preparing your guest blog posts.  Though a service, a tour can be put together frequently with less notice than on your own and with far less hassle.

So I asked myself.  What are the various companies and how do they compare?

While this is hardly a comprehensive list, I tried as best I can to find as many services as possible for you to peruse.  Each service is slightly different and I also tried to highlight the things I felt were important between them, though they often have widely varying services, like Goddess Fish will make book trailers and Worldwind will make tour graphics for a price, even if you are not touring with them.

So, without further ado...

Bewitching Book Tours

http://bewitchingbooktours.blogspot.com/p/tour-pricing.html
This company seems to be able to hand a large quantity of tours at the same time with an impressive number of tour hosts.  Specializing in paranormal, urban fantasy, and paranormal erotica.  This company does a pretty decent job with the tour buttons.  The site does not make any guarantees about how many book reviews you'll get because it depends on host participation, only the number of blogs you will be hosted on.  It offers a variety of different types of posts.  Includes tour buttons in packages.

Tour Packages Range from $35-155

Enchanted Book Promotions

I also like the tour buttons this company does and their new site is so much better than their old one (which looked like it was designed for a five year old obsessed with Disney Princesses).  Includes tour banner in packages.

Tour Packages Range from $19-249

Goddess Fish Promotions

http://www.goddessfish.com/tours.htm
Not overly enthused with the quality of their banners.  They specialize in romance fiction (in all its sub-genres: fantasy, suspense, paranormal, historical, etc), other genre fiction (mystery, SFF, etc) and Young Adult / Middle Grade fiction.  Includes tour banners in packages.

Tour Packages Range from $30-225 (With Book trailer)

Worldwind Virtual Book Tours

http://worldwindvirtualbooktours.weebly.com/services.html
The one day includes a $50 Amazon gift card, which will be raffled away as part of the package.  The packages don't exactly match up with some of the other sites I've reviewed here.  The $130 package is 15 tour stops in 1-2 weeks.  Packages include a tour banner, which are among the best I've seen.  This is a brand new company, but I really like their banners and there's no limit on the number of stops for each package.  That's the minimum stops for your tour, which is unique and is one of the reasons I like this company, despite the higher price point for their tours.

Tour Packages Range from $100-260

Sizzling PR

Packages include tour graphics.  Single cheapest package.

Tour Packages Range from $15-70

Virtual Book Tour Cafe

Packages include a static banner.

Tour Packages Range from $35-360

TLC Book Tours
http://tlcbooktours.com/services/
I'm not overly fond of their website as they do not list any rates on their site.  It doesn't say anything about other forms of promotion.  They focus on book reviews and getting books noticed by book clubs.  I can't, honestly, see a lot of new authors choosing this options.

Tour Packages Range from $549-1456

These last two had no information on their sites and I never got responses from the people involved so...

This is a great comparison! Thank you for this input. I'm actually looking for my July tour company now, so this is perfect.

This is GREAT!! Thanks so much for sharing this info. A lot of effort obviously went into it. I have already contacted one of the Virtual Book Tour sites. I'll share a link to your post with a writing group I'm a member of. Thanks again.

Beware you get what you pay for. Cheapest isn't always the best. Check their track record. See who has toured with what company, look at their history, and see who actually runs the company. Is in just a blogger who decided to start working on tours, is it an author, is it someone who has been in the business for awhile and knows what they are doing?

Excellent comments. That was one of the many things I took into account. I like Bewitching so much because they have a rather obscene amount of tour hosts and, for example, they currently have 35 tours running. The list of tours they have run just goes on and on. Goddess Fish is equally prolific.

Yes Nikki! I agree 100% with your comment.

There are many book blog tour companies out there now, and a wide range of prices. Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours is on the lower end of the price range, which makes it appealing to indie authors who are wanting to promote but operating within a very tight, very limited budget.

I am not an indie author, but a publicist, and I placed 5 books on 5 different book blog tour companies. All had the same number of stops (30), but Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours is the only company I felt I was totally mislead by.

These were the biggest issues with Reading Addiction:

1. More than half of the blog sites hosting stops were either very obviously run by Reading Addiction or were sites that ONLY hosted Reading Addiction blog tours. Their tour hosts had little to no other content besides Reading Addiction Virtual posts. I don't think it needs to be pointed out that book blogs with nothing but content from a single tour company (or only content from tour companies in general) are suspect.

2. Out of the 10-15 review stops, there were—in actuality—only 7 bloggers selected the book for a review. Out of those 7, 2 never posted their reviews (and were never heard from, meaning the tour days were lost). Out of the other 5, only a single blogger cross posted onto Amazon. SO, out of 10-15 review stops advertised, there were only 5 completed and only 1 that made it off a hosts blog site.

3. Reading Addiction is really disorganized. It was left up to me to check the stops daily and to notify them when a committed post on the tour wasn't made. Sometimes it was posted within an hour or two after, sometimes it wasn't at all. Worst of all, when it was NOT posted for the day I never heard back from Reading Addiction. This was frequent. Nearly ¼ of the scheduled stops weren't posted until I inquired about them. Not that it makes much difference (see #1).

There are other issues, but these should be enough to discourage authors and publicists from using Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours. The other 4 companies I worked with all commented on stops along the way (which showed they were clearly checking for posts themselves), all had a variety of quality book blogs with both organic and tour content, and all maintained the advertised number of reviews with excellent cross-posting on both Amazon and Goodreads.

The bottom line is exactly what Nikki said: Cheapest isn't always best. Check their track record.

This is so funny, I started a list like this recently on my site, but it's about my experiences with these companies. A lot of the websites looked great, but the execution has been lackluster for some of these places. I only have two companies up now, but will have the other two companies I have tried up by the end of the week. I'll soon be adding a place where everyone can add their own tour experience., because its truly about the execution. http://www.selfpublishingsuccessfully.com/Bestblogtour.html

Hi there, this is Lisa from TLC. Just wanted to let you know that the price range you show for us is inflated and incorrect; we don't have any packages anywhere near the top end of that range. FYI Our tours are review tours, rather than highlights, blitzes, banners, or cover reveals.

Thanks for the comparison. Just a few other book tours to look at as well (I am not associated with any of these, BTW):

1. http://www.booktour.org - free!
2. http://xpressobooktours.com/
3. http://www.rockstarbooktours.com/ - also free, but highly selective.

I hope this helps!

In fact, I wanted to replicate the success with another virtual tour and have picked pumpupyourbook this time. The tour starts in 4 weeks, I have paid my money and will let you know the outcome.

I used Pump Up Your Books for my first blog tour in 2013 and they were too expensive, delivered 2 reviews for the entire tour, and did nothing more than paste the Amazon book description on various purported blog sites. I might add I had to personally contact the two reviewers and beg them to post their reviews on Amazon. Otherwise, I would not have happened. An overpriced disaster. Have gone on to much better results and cheaper from other sites.
